Residents in Spain Undertook 60.4 Million Trips in the Third Quarter of 2024

During the third quarter of 2024, residents in Spain made a total of 60.4 million trips, representing a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to the same period in 2023. Domestic trips declined by 2.2%, while international trips saw a significant increase of 15.5%.

Travel Purposes and Accommodation Trends

Leisure, recreation, and vacation trips decreased by 2.0% during this quarter, while visits to family or friends increased by 3.8%. Business and professional trips dropped by 3.2%, but trips for other purposes grew by 4.7%. Stays in family or friends’ homes for domestic trips dropped by 10.8%, whereas hotel stays for international trips rose by 4.3%.

Top Destinations and Regions of Origin

The most popular domestic destinations were Andalucía, Cataluña, and Comunitat Valenciana. Residents of Comunidad de Madrid made the most trips, followed by those from Cataluña and Andalucía.

Travel Expenditures

Total expenditure for these trips reached €24.5 billion, an increase of 4.2% compared to the same quarter in 2023. Domestic travel expenditures decreased slightly by 0.3%, while international travel expenditures surged by 14.2%. The highest domestic expenditure was on accommodation, while international trips saw transport as the leading expense.

Monthly Trends and Day Trips

August was the busiest month, with 24.9 million trips and an average duration of 7.9 overnight stays. However, day trips by residents aged 15 and older fell by 19.1% compared to the previous year, totaling 51.3 million.

These results highlight shifts in travel behaviors, with a notable increase in international travel and changing expenditure patterns.
